The Lector Ministry

General Information

Lectors are members of the Assembly who proclaim the Word in the first two scripture readings. They also assist in creating a hospitable and prayerful environment by praying the Prayers of the Faithful.

Training and preparation are necessary for those persons wishing to be Lectors. Proclaiming the Sacred Scripture is different from other kinds of public speaking. Not only do Lectors need to be effective communicators, but they need to absorb and express the spirit of the Liturgy as well. Annual training sessions are required in January.

Speaking of readers at the Liturgy, Vatican II said, "They excercise a genuine liturgical function. They ought, therefore, to discharge their office with the sincere piety and decorum demanded by so exalted a ministry and right expected of them by God's people. Consequently, they must all be trained to perform their functions in a correct and orderly manner... Christ is present in His word since it is He Himself who speaks when the Holy Scriptures are read in the church."

Beach House at Christ Our King

Dear Parishioners,

We are embarking on a new and exciting project and Christ Our King and hope that you will applaud and support this endeavor.

As you know, for at least the last twenty years we have had a very active Youth and Senior Ministries. Each of these has had a center that was originally built for use as a home. (The Youth Center was originally a store, which later became the frist rectory; the Senior Center was previously the home of a parishioner which we bought and adapted.

What we would like to do at this time is somewhat unique, but hopefully extremely beneficial to both youth and seniors. It is our hope to construct an intergenerational facility shared by both ministries. There would be space designated for each group, but shared space also, which will provide a wonderful opportunity for mutual influence, support, growth, and understanding.

The "Beach House" would be precisely that -- not an institutional facility but a home -- generating warmth and comfort, promoting relaxation and celebration. This webpage describes this concept.

Our goal is to build the "Beach House" to the standards of sustainable design established by the EarthCraft program. This acclaimed green building program out of Atlanta employs the latest methods of resource and energy-efficient construction.

Thank you for your support of and contribution to this unique concept.

Gratefully,

Rev. Msgr. James A. Carter, P.A.
